Is vinyl a good choice for Southern California sun and wind?
Yes, with the right build. Vinyl does not rot, does not feed termites and does not need paint or stain. Sprinklers and dry summers do not hurt it the way they hurt wood. Good quality vinyl contains UV inhibitors, so it keeps its color well in strong sun.
Things to know before you choose
- Heat movement. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature. A proper installation leaves room for that movement.
- Wind. Santa Ana winds push hard on solid panels. Reinforced posts and rails, set deep, keep the fence straight.
- Impact. Vinyl can crack if hit hard by a mower or a car. Individual pieces can be swapped out.
- Color. You cannot repaint it easily, so pick a color you will like for years.
Cheap, thin vinyl can sag and discolor, so we talk through wall thickness and post reinforcement with you before the quote.
