Which wood works for a fence in Anaheim?
The common choices are redwood, cedar and pressure-treated pine or fir. Each has a place.
- Redwood is the traditional California fence wood. It resists rot and insects well, takes stain nicely and stays straight when it is good stock.
- Cedar is similar, with a pleasant smell and good stability. It costs more than pine.
- Pressure-treated pine or fir is the budget choice. It holds up if the posts and cut ends are treated, but it can twist or crack as it dries.
Local conditions to plan for
Southern California has strong sun and long dry spells, which dry out and gray untreated wood. Termites are a real concern in Orange County, so posts and any wood touching soil should be rated for ground contact. Lawn sprinklers aimed at the fence line cause more early rot than rain does, so we suggest keeping the heads clear of the boards.
A seal or stain every couple of years keeps any wood fence looking better and lasting longer.
